PC-ControLAB: A Windows® based process control loop simulation program. The realistic user interface has the features of most operator workstations, hence there is essentially no learning curve required for beneficial use of the program.
The program contains 13 control strategies (Feedback, Dual Feedback, Ratio, Cascade, 2 forms of Feedforward, Override, 2 forms of Decoupling and 4 forms of Model-Based Control) and numerous process model representing typical dynamic dynamic processes such as temperature, pressure, flow and level applications.
A companion program which is furnished with PC-ControLAB, Builder, permits user configuration of additional process models by graphically selecting, linking and parameterizing standard function blocks. Thus a user can quite readily configure a process model which qualitatively resembles real process applications.
The software package is furnished on one CD, and includes extensive HELP files and tutorials, plus over 20 laboratory and demonstration exercises which can be used in support of process control training seminars as well as for self study.
User-friendly interface resembles a real control station. Minimizes learning time.
Auto/Manual mode selection buttons and mode indication LEDs
Set point and output entry via "jog" buttons or key in a particular value through a dialog box.
Tuning display permits entry of Gain or Proportional Band, Integral in minutes/repeat or repeats/min, and Derivative time.
Scheduled tuning option, applicable to proportional, integral and derivative modes.
Load control buttons permit forcing a step change or enabling automatic load changes. Statistical properties of the automatic load changes are user selectable.
Control menu permits selection of control strategies:
-Feedback Override (Selector).
-Dual Feedback Two forms of Feed forward.
-Cascade Four forms of Model-Based Control
Dual faceplates (e.g., Primary and Secondary) for Dual Feedback, Cascade, Feedforward, Override and Decoupling controls strategies.
Control Options permit selection of control algorithm and controller features found in commercial systems, such as direct or reverse acting, set point tracking, anti-reset windup and output limits.
Data logging to a printer, designated file or screen display. User selection of variables to be logged and logging frequency.
Ten predefined process models
Process model BUILDER program (furnished) permits user graphical configuration of additional process models - no programming required.
Hard copy Users manual in addition to on-screen HELP.
20 laboratory exercises support immediate use in process control seminars or self-study.
PC-ControLAB is supplied with 24 laboratory and demonstration exercises, ready for immediate use in a process control course or training seminar. Registered users may freely copy these for use in a course, or make adaptations as necessary.
MPC-ControLAB: is a demonstration program for demonstrating the behavior of model predictive control. Its user interface, based upon PC-ControLAB, contains a scrolling grid which displays the past 60 minutes of activity, and a fixed grid which displays the predicted future activity of process variables for the next 30 minutes. The simulation can either be run continuously, or - under user control - be operated in a "step" mode. The step mode permits user examination of the results of each step of a calculation cycle.
A User's Guide, Technical Overview and Laboratory Exercise can be accessed under the HELP menu item.
MPC-ControLAB is included at no additional charge on the PC-ControLAB CD.
BUILDER
Builder is used to construct process models for PC-ControLAB. A graphical interface permits a user to select function blocks (from a library of 32 blocks), connect and parameterize these. After the process model is configured, it is named and saved, thereby becoming available to PC-ControLAB.
Wade Associates, Inc. also conducts training seminars on process control for:
Typical courses offered are: For Engineers: Basic and Advanced Regulatory Control Strategies. This practical level course covers the principles and tuning of feedback (PID) control as well as the benefits, selection, design and implementation of advanced regulatory control such as ratio, cascade, feed forward, decoupling and model based control. Engineers or others who are responsible for design, configuration, analysis, tuning and start-up of process control loops will benefit from this course. (Typically 3 - 5 days). A unique feature of this course is the extensive use of a PC, running a control loop simulation program PC-ControLAB to provide a realistic demonstration of each of the topics presented. For Instrumentation Technicians and Operators: Fundamentals of Controller Tuning. This course, which is approximately 1/3 lecture, 2/3 practice, covers classical methods of controller tuning, but gives primary emphasis on ways developed by Wade Associates for rapidly improving the tuning of existing loops. Covers feedback and cascade loops for standard applications such as temperature, pressure, flow and level. Emphasis is also given to other factors besides controller tuning which may be the cause of poor control loop behaviour. Makes use of in-class PC's running a control loop simulation program (PC-ControLAB) to provide realistic practice of the tuning techniques presented. (Typically 1 1/2 - 2 days).
